Tulum es un lugar muy conocido en todo el mundo, pero su historia no lo es tanto.

Hace no mucho tiempo, Tulum era un pequeño poblado formado por apenas unas diez palapas de madera levantadas alrededor de un pozo de agua.

Estaban localizadas en un claro en medio del monte, rodeado por la selva de un lado y por el manglar del otro. Solo allí sus habitantes podían cultivar una milpa.  

Este lugar era un mundo mágico suspendido en el tiempo.

La gente que vivía aquí eran familias mayas que permanecieron durante décadas prácticamente aisladas del resto del país. El contacto existía únicamente con otros poblados cercanos, muy parecidos entre sí, porque llegar hasta aquí era una tarea difícil y peligrosa. 

No había caminos, mucho menos carreteras. Incluso llegar a la playa requería abrirse paso entre la vegetación, machete en mano.

Pero un día, esa burbuja se rompió...

A finales de los años sesenta, Tulum comenzó a formar parte de los planes del Gobierno de México para impulsar el desarrollo turístico del Caribe Mexicano. Ese proceso transformó para siempre la vida de sus habitantes originarios, quienes empezaron a convivir con personas provenientes de distintas regiones de México y del mundo.

La mayoría llegaría solo por un tiempo, para trabajar o vacacionar. Pero algunos descubrieron aquí un paraíso al que quisieron pertenecer y decidieron quedarse.

Con el tiempo trajeron a sus familias o formaron una nueva aquí. 

Y la mezcla de culturas comenzó.

Lo extraordinario de la historia de Tulum es que la mayor parte de su transformación ocurrió en el transcurso de una sola generación, por lo tanto muchas de las personas que presenciaron su desarrollo siguen viviendo en el mismo territorio que un día decidieron llamar hogar.

Ellxs siguen adaptándose a un Tulum cosmopolita y gentrificado, que se resiste a perder su origen y sus tradiciones.

Es una comunidad diversa que ha aprendido a mantenerse unida en las temporadas altas y en las bajas, y también en los momentos más difíciles, como el paso de los huracanes.

Aman Tulum porque reconocen en esta tierra un lugar noble y generoso, capaz de recibir a personas de orígenes muy distintos y permitirles construir aquí una vida en común.

Not long ago, Tulum was a small village made up of no more than ten wooden thatched huts built around a freshwater well.

They stood in a clearing surrounded by the jungle on one hand, and the mangroves at the other. It was the only place where the land could be cleared to grow a milpa, the local cornfield.  

This was a magical world, suspended in time.  

The people who lived here were Maya families who, for decades, remained largely isolated from the rest of the country. Their contact was limited to nearby villages much like their own, because reaching this place was difficult—and often dangerous.

There were no roads, let alone highways. Even getting to the beach meant cutting a path through the dense vegetation, machete in hand.

But one day, that bubble burst.

In the late 1960s, Tulum became part of the Mexican government’s plans to promote tourism along the Mexican Caribbean. That decision transformed the lives of its original inhabitants forever, as they began sharing their home with people arriving from different parts of Mexico and from around the world.

Most came only for a season—to work or to vacation. But some discovered a paradise they wanted to belong to, and they chose to stay.

Over time, they brought their families with them, or started new ones here.

And so, cultures began to blend.

What makes Tulum’s story extraordinary is that most of its transformation took place within a single generation. As a result, many of the people who witnessed that change are still living in the very place they once chose to call home. 

They continue adapting to a cosmopolitan, gentrified Tulum that still struggles to preserve its roots and traditions.

It is a diverse community that has learned to stand together through the high season and the low season alike, and through its most difficult moments, including the passing of hurricanes.

They love Tulum because they see it as a generous land—one that welcomes people from vastly different backgrounds and allows them to build a shared life together.
